I have been described as an “old soul”, which I believe is highlighted by my preference of working with physical media. I began seriously drawing late into high school, starting with Microsoft paint. I eventually switched to pencil and paper, buying a sketchbook online and looking up tutorials on how to draw proportions correctly and make compelling character designs. That’s when I realized I wanted to go to school for it, and started taking more drawing oriented classes in my senior year of high school.
I had done collage in the past, but never as a serious medium. It wasn’t until college that I had an assignment where we had to create a book cover, and I wanted to try collage again. I ended up falling in love with it, and went on to collage 12 images for one of my finals in another class. I am exploring other means of collage, such as found items and sculptures. I want to use collage in unique ways to create characters and worlds, as I enjoy creating character designs for comics, movies, shows, etc.
Collage is my favorite way to express myself because it’s like putting a puzzle together, except I choose the pieces. It gives me more creative freedom with limited assets, which helps keep me on track. Art is important to me because it’s my way of showing a part of myself to the world; everything I create has a piece of me in it. I lean more towards character design because that’s what I find most compelling about art as a whole, and I can combine that with my love for writing; bringing these drawings to life with words on a page. That’s why comic books mean so much to me; it allows both illustration and writing to mesh together and create something fantastical.
